Fostering Coexistence Between Communities and Leopards
Leopards in the Western Cape province of South Africa face significant threats from habitat loss, declining prey numbers, and human conflict. The Cape Leopard Trust (CLT) uses research as a conservation tool, finding solutions to human-wildlife conflict while promoting peaceful coexistence, protecting landscapes, and fostering education and advocacy. It raises awareness of broader biodiversity issues and ecosystem conservation through collaboration with communities, landowners and partner organisations.
A key initiative is their eco-clubs programme, which delivers four to eight tailored lessons to children throughout the school year. These regular contact sessions build knowledge and understanding about leopard conservation and healthy ecosystems, often including facilitated educational excursions for valuable practical experience.
The Royal Portfolio Foundation proudly sponsors this programme at Wes-Eind Primary School in Franschhoek, enabling eco-club lessons for Grade 6 learners, covering topics from biodiversity to green careers and technology for nature.
In line with the Foundation’s principles of conserving and protecting wildlife, we sponsor camera traps for research purposes, contribute annually to their educational programme and provide a venue for their fundraising events.
