White Sandy Beaches
Aside from being the best place for whale watching on the planet, Hermanus is renowned for its wild beauty, Champagne air, proximity to the Hemel-en-Aarde wine route and for having pristine swimming beaches that are perfect for sunbathing and surfing.
Two of the finest Hermanus beaches can be found below Birkenhead House. Voëlklip, (‘bird rock’ in Afrikaans) and Kamma Bay. The team at Birkenhead House will pack a picnic basket for you complete with beach bats and balls to take to the beach for a relaxed day on the sands – or grab one of our surfboards and wet suits before paddling out. Grotto beach is an easy ten-minute walk away along the world-renowned Hermanus cliff path that runs past the hotel and has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag Status. This award requires a high standard of cleanliness, environmental protection and full-time lifeguards and security.
