Understanding Our Marine Ecosystems
Lessons in Conservation’s (LiC’s) Marine Programme introduces students to marine environments, teaching them marine conservation and ecological principles. The programme focuses on local marine life, including the Western Cape’s kelp forests, abalone harvesting, and the critically endangered African penguin. Students learn about sustainable seafood choices through engagement with WWF’s SASSI programme.
Through project-based learning and interactive activities, learners explore real-world solutions, including participating in group discussions, building coral reefs from recycled materials and undertaking drawing exercises. Students also discover marine conservation careers and employment opportunities while connecting directly with local communities and environments, making learning both relevant and meaningful. Following a “teach the teachers” model, trained hospitality staff share their knowledge directly with local schoolchildren, expanding the programme’s reach through local expertise.
The hands-on approach includes educational trips to organisations such as Stony Point, providing learners with time and space to explore solutions and develop their own ideas, fostering a deeper understanding of marine environments and the challenges they face.
