Little Explorers
The expert Guides and Trackers at Royal Malewane love to share their knowledge with kids of all ages and are masters at making that knowledge accessible to future generations of nature lovers.
Mother Nature's Classroom
Royal Malewane started as the Biden family’s holiday home in the bush, so the family safari focus today is a model based on personal experiences with kids and nature. Children have spent many happy years here growing up close to nature, and that is why it was so important to the Bidens that visiting children could experience the magic of safari.
Royal Malewane allows families to feel Africa’s positive spirit, witness its wildlife and wilderness, and step into nature’s classroom to create new perspectives for young minds. From learning how to track animals to the thrill of seeing predators on a hunt, each experience opens a world of knowledge, while strengthening cherished bonds between loved ones.
Guides Who Are Great With Kids
Our Guides are some of the most qualified in Africa, and part of their training and their passion is to facilitate family experiences out on game drive, on foot, and back at the lodge.
They will point out tracks in the sand and share secrets about the wild fruit you can eat, or how to dig for water in a riverbed. The safari experience is about making a connection and spending time in the presence of elephants, seeing a giraffe feed from the thorny branches of trees, and finding entertainment in a troop of mischievous baboons.
Royal Rangers Club
We have a number of surprises and special activities designed for our young guests, including an amenities range, bush backpack (with sunscreen, chapstick and a water bottle), activity booklets, the Royal Cubs Spa menu, kitchen activities (baking and homemade play-dough) and an animal checklist with pictures.
For slightly older children we have a Junior Rangers course, which includes a “scatalogue” to identify different animal droppings; plaster of Paris moulding kit for animal tracks; bird identification guidelines for 10 common birds; plant identification info; and a playbook full of fun facts and activities.
Kids At Waterside
At Waterside, we bring the storybook fantasies to life for children of all ages. The leopards that stalk through the grass, the monkeys that swing from the trees, and the hippos that wallow in the mud all leap off the pages and into reality.
We have made it a priority to engage children through interactive activities, a dedicated kids’ booklet full of interesting facts and lessons from the bush. At Waterside, there are an array of activities for young guests both out on safari and back at the lodge, including animal checklists, a dedicated games room, kids boma, jungle gym, arts and crafts, a bush quiz, and our Royal Rangers Club programme.
