Not just a pipe dream
Water is essential to life, and by ensuring water security we can improve people’s quality of life – not least by saving them from having to undertake long, arduous walks to well points. We began by addressing the water supply issue at the Clinic, then assisted the wider community of Sigagule with new water points, repairs to existing waterholes, and the provision of electric pumps.
When community members no longer have to walk to distant wells, they can devote more time to paid work or developing small businesses, or perhaps even studying or training towards a new career in ecotourism.
Having clean water readily available contributes to public health by reducing the spread of communicable diseases, and also gives people the option of establishing organic vegetable gardens to improve their nutrition.
Supplying clean water is aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and is one of the most effective ways of addressing poverty, both directly and indirectly.
