Lessons in Conservation
Royal Malewane
Building Environmental Awareness Through Education
Lessons in Conservation (LiC) is a non-profit, youth-led organisation operating across 11 African countries, educating children about ecological principles and conservation by observing and experiencing wildlife in its natural habitat.
LiC runs workshops for hospitality staff on environmental, community and conservation issues, emphasising shared responsibility. This approach strengthens connections between lodge staff and community projects.
Recently, the organisation trained Royal Malewane staff from housekeeping, gardening, Guides, Trackers and management. Working within the incredible biodiversity of the Greater Kruger area, these staff members have been sharing their new knowledge and discoveries across different departments.
The most significant development is that trained Royal Malewane staff members now teach children from nearby primary schools directly, expanding community impact through local expertise. This partnership shows how hospitality establishments can drive conservation education, creating environmental awareness programmes that reach well beyond lodge boundaries into surrounding communities.
