'Photography From The Field' is a monthly collection of the best wildlife imagery taken by our Rangers and Trackers at Royal Malewane.

July was another exceptional month in the bush. The cold weather didn’t put a damper on game viewing, and we were blessed with some extraordinary sightings.

Yawning Hippo

Water levels are dropping, and male hippos are getting increasingly possessive over this precious commodity. This male showed his disapproval of our presence as we drove past his watering hole. – Nicola Jooste

Leopard Cub

A new female leopard has taken up residence of a vacant territory in the north of our reserve, and was soon seen mating with the dominant male of that area. The result was three beautiful little cubs, that are providing us with exceptional photographic opportunities. – Ryan Jack

A myriad of vultures alerted us to the presence of a potential kill. Upon further investigation we found a rhino carcass, presumably killed by an aggressive elephant. The sight was a hive of activity with vultures and black-backed jackal fighting over the best cuts. – Riaan Fourie

Drinking Impala

During these dry times, it is often a good idea to quietly sit at watering holes and wait for animals to come to you. We were enjoying some quiet time at one such waterhole, when I snapped this image of a small herd of impala coming to the water’s edge to have drink. –Juan Pinto

Lion Cubs

The lion cubs in Northern Thornybush are growing more curious and confident by the day. They are still denning in the dry Monwana riverbed, making for some unobstructed views of the little ones. –Rudi Hulshof
