'Photography From The Field' is a monthly collection of the best wildlife imagery taken by our Rangers and Trackers at Royal Malewane.

January is one of the most special times of the year in the bushveld. Many of the mammal species choose to have their young during this time of plenty, and the bush seems to come alive after its winter slumber.

The Giraffe Male

The Giraffe male has been the ruler of the now famous Blackdam Pride for almost three years, and has grown into a beautiful male lion. His first litter of cubs has reached independence, and the females are showing the first signs of a next estrous cycle. – Riaan Fourie

Sunset Elephant

Towards the end of the dry season, elephants congregate in areas with some remaining greenery. The dry riverbeds, with their associated reed beds, make for for perfect feeding areas. The sun setting over the Timbavati river formed the perfect backdrop for this image. – Rudi Hulshof

Young Lion

The young lions from the Monwana Pride have reached independence, and the two males are becoming more nomadic in search of a territory of their own. We found them one morning resting on a termite mound, with the blue sky providing a clean, crisp background. – Rudi Hulshof

An Elephant testing the air

We are still experiencing a great influx of elephants out of the greater Kruger. Many of these pachyderms may not have been exposed to vehicles all that often, and are sometimes slightly distrustful of our presence. This female tentatively sniffed the air before hastily crossing the road in front of us. –Nik Vonnou

Amur Falcon

These amazing birds embark on an astronomical migration every year, leaving their breeding grounds in Siberia and northeastern Mongolia, and traveling 11 000 km into Southern Africa by mid November. Large flocks of these falcons are a common sight in our summer skies. – Juan Pinto
