Waterside at Royal Malewane

Accommodation at Waterside

Redefining the traditional safari experience

The uniquely bold design of Waterside has been recognised by Travel + Leisure, who included our new lodge on their 2023 It List of the world’s 100 most exciting new places to stay. By redefining what it means to go on safari, Waterside has been getting people’s attention, and delighting our guests. From the moment you step across the floating entrance bridge, you’ll instantly feel the warm, welcoming ambience of Waterside and the invigorating energy of the African bush. The views of the bustling waterhole fringed by fever trees will draw you in – being able to watch wildlife from the lodge is the first hint of the memorable modern safari to come.

A world of colour awaits

Stimulating your sense of sight, Waterside promises to leave you enchanted. Speaking to the bold, seasonal hues of the bush, Waterside proves that Liz is not afraid to play with colour. Your eyes will dance from room to room, catching the clever interpretations of this unique design, which matches every shade with its mirror image in nature. Liz has individually decorated and designed each room – yet one thing remains the same – they are all eclectic and abundantly generous.

Modern Dining with a South African Twist

Stimulate your sense of taste and savour the personalised menus created in the Waterside kitchen where Head Chef Cheslin Cornelissen brings bold flavours and soul-stirring recipes from his Capetonian background. Waterside’s modern menus are designed to fuse our pride in national food traditions with fresh, seasonal produce. There’s no better place to tuck in and taste the rainbow than under the fever trees at the edge of our waterhole.

This was a unique experience of a life time. Everything was superb, luxurious and well executed. Everything was looked into the most scrupulous details with a true sense of classic safari romance. Their night-game drives are a must, Fantastic!

I thought I liked things simple and sepia in the bush in Africa. And why bother with a plunge pool when you have an elephant at the watering hole to contemplate? But that was before I spent a long weekend at The Farmstead at Royal Malewane. Long live fuschia, turquoise, and emerald green, I say – how fresh. As for the plunge pool, there is no place better from which to take in the sights and sounds of a hot African afternoon.

It takes daring and smarts to step away from neutral zones and break out in colours that only nature has the courage to do. The result is Africa House. Africa House has not only been populated with furniture sourced from Liz Biden’s wide travel, she has also introduced a riot of accent colour that would fail in the hands not quite as skilled and savvy.

Never before had I experienced the wonders of Africa like this. Royal Malewane is a magical place that stays in your mind forever. I’m always dreaming of going back with my grandson so he too can experience the true Africa and the splendour of the lodge and it’s staff.

One of my first experiences in the bush, staying at Royal Malewane, was the extreme comfort of it all. Every detail was perfection, from the bed linen to the Lapsang Souchong in the tea caddy.
