At The Royal Portfolio we believe passionately in investing in Africa. We strive to uplift local communities, promote conservation and protect the environment. Revenue from tourism should be used to ensure sustainability of the industry, to create jobs and to conserve Africa’s precious wildlife and spectacular landscapes for generations to come.
The Royal Portfolio Foundation was established by the Biden Family in order to facilitate investment in numerous community and conservation efforts. Each of The Royal Portfolio’s properties supports a number of projects relevant to their unique location.
Royal Malewane Projects
A visit to the local community is inspiring, humbling and educational.
Our mission was to create a meaningful change in the lives of the children of the Sigagule Crèche, by creating an environment where they could learn and have fun in a safe and healthy environment.
Royal Malewane with the help of generous donations from our guests has been able to complete meaningful improvements at the school including the building of an additional classroom, laying water pipes to the kitchen and building new toilet facilities, hanging blinds and repainting, building a jungle gym and play area for the children and planting a vegetable and fruit garden (which now supplies 80% of their fruit and vegetables) and planted fruit trees.
But most importantly, we have been able to introduce a ‘Step By Step’ teachers curriculum for Sigagule and the other rural schools in the area. Read more here.
Transfers for all guests to Sigagule are free of charge.
More than three rhinos are brutally killed every day in South Africa. The guiding team at Royal Malewane are on the ground fighting the war against rhino poaching. In partnership with the Protrack Anti Poaching Units, we are making a real investment into the survival of these majestic creatures.
Birkenhead House Projects
Masibulele Crèche looks after about 150 children from infants to 5 years old. They rely on the local council for support, but so much more is needed. There are 5 teachers that work voluntarily and who do not get paid. Parents pay a school fee of about R50 a month and this goes towards food, stationery, toys and toiletries. Sweetness Rwexan is in charge at the school and she has humbly asked for assistance with building material, garden maintenance, toys, food and other basics. They do not ask for money. They are amazing ladies doing the best they can for their little community.
La Residence Projects
THE KUSASA PROJECT
Based in Franschhoek, this organisation aims ‘to stimulate children’s minds & aspirations to a future beyond poverty – a brighter & healthier tomorrow. La Residence currently provides financial support towards the project to help maintain and improve the educational opportunities which the project currently provides, such as their literacy programme, sports exchanges and field trips. On a weekly basis, Kusasa feeds 700 children through their Breakfast Club, and provides after school support such as homework, reading sessions and other clubs. The Kusasa Project also supports a crèche, which our guests are welcome to visit.
The Silo Projects
Leliebloem House was founded under the guidance of Bishop Gray in 1868 in Cape Town.
Today the Non-profit Child & Youth Care Centre serves as a home-away-from-homes for over 60 children from troubled families. These children, all between the ages of 4 and 18, have been removed by Child Protection Agencies from their primary caregivers and placed via the children’s court for specialist care and intervention programs in Leliebloem House.
Through various development, therapeutic, and management programs, Leliebloem aims to restore family bonds, improve the quality of life experienced by these young adolescents, and reintegrate them back into healthy, functioning families.
Leliebloem House is an organization held close to the Biden’s hearts, and The Royal Portfolio looks forward to supporting the organization as it moves towards its 150th birthday.
