The South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) is a registered NPO whose primary objective is to reverse the decline of seabird populations through the rescue, rehabilitation and release of ill, injured, abandoned and oiled seabirds – especially endangered species like the African penguin.
Since its inception in 1968, SANCOB has had an alarming number of seabirds admitted for care annually, treated a vast number of different bird species, and reared countless abandoned chicks for release back into the wild. SANCCOB provides a 24/7 rescue service and is recognised internationally as a leader in the field of seabird rehabilitation.
The team at The Silo Hotel and The Royal Portfolio Foundation assist SANCCOB by raising funds through various educational campaigns and creating awareness around the rapid decline of our endangered African penguin population among international and local guests.
In February 2020, The Silo Hotel and the Biden family ‘adopted’ four at-risk African penguins. We are pleased to announce that Vicky, Alfie, Captain Luis and Major Kielan have since been released back into the wild following a successful rehabilitation period at SANCCOB!
