'Photography From The Field' is a monthly collection of the best wildlife imagery taken by our Rangers and Trackers at Royal Malewane.

Early summer is now in full swing and new life has been injected into the bush following some early rains. Migratory birds are once again a common feature in the Lowveld skies, and the impala ewes are all walking around with large pregnant bellies, ready for the new arrivals in the next month or so.

Swallow-tailed Bee-eater

This time of year always offers a few surprises, especially on the birding front. We found this beautiful swallow-tailed bee-eater towards the middle of the month close to camp. It was a true rarity for our reserve, and a species that has only been seen three or four times in our region. – Nik Vounnou

Giraffe Reflection

Giraffes are always nervous around watering holes, and reluctant to drink in the presence of our vehicles. This individual tested our patience, but we were richly rewarded with a beautiful sighting when she eventually did come down to the water’s edge.  – Obakeng Medupe

High Speed Wild Dog

Wild dogs are tough animals to keep up with when they’re on the move, especially when hunting. We were lucky enough to find this pack hunting Impala in some open terrain one morning. A fast shutter speed froze the moment as the alpha male darted past our vehicle in hot pursuit. – Riaan Fourie

Lion Paw

Lions can be frustrating animals to photograph as they spend most of the daylight hours sleeping. I often look for interesting ‘detail’ shots, such as this paw, in these situations. –Andre Fourie

Hyena Battle

Hyenas are territorial animals, and we were alerted to their ‘wooping’ calls one morning whilst having coffee before game drive. We found two clans shortly after setting off in a dispute over their territorial lines. The early morning sun made for beautiful, dramatic imagery. – Darrel Camden-Smith
