Photography From The Field | June 2018
'Photography From The Field' is a monthly collection of the best wildlife imagery taken by our Rangers and Trackers at Royal Malewane.
It might historically be the coldest month of the year, but June has also proved to be one of the best months for game viewing. This June was also marked by a brief return of the ‘Sandringham sisters’; a rare white lioness and her tawny sister.
Elephants still abound on the reserve, providing us with great photographic opportunities. I used a 500mm telephoto lens to get in close to the action, and just loved the symmetry of the tusks as these two young males approached each other. – Lourenco da Silva
These two females are resident on a neighboring property, but decided to venture into Thornybush, probably in search of food. The recessive trait that causes the white colour mutation, is thought to be indigenous of our region, and was first recorded in 1938. – Juan Pinto
Top of the list for many safari-goers is the quintessential leopard sleeping in the branches of a large tree. We happened upon this beautiful young male late one morning, resting in the vicinity of his impala kill. He is an unknown male in our area, and we are hoping that he will stake out a territory for himself here. – Riaan Fourie
With the Blackdam Pride on our doorstep, we’ll seldom venture north to view lions. News that the Monwana pride had new cubs changed that however, and we took the long trek up north to visit their den site one morning. We were lucky enough to find the six cubs frolicking in a dry riverbed, providing for some excellent, and adorable, photos. –Rudi Hulshof
This small group of young elephant bulls, made use of the cooling afternoon temperatures to socialize and engage in some rough-and-tumble. The setting sun behind them made for a magical ‘flare’ that really set the mood in this image. –Darrel Camden-Smith
