'Photography From The Field' is a monthly collection of the best wildlife imagery taken by our Rangers and Trackers at Royal Malewane.

February is historically the warmest month in the Lowveld, and this year was no different. The soaring temperatures kept most animals close to the waterholes, and this made them relatively easy to find. Game viewing was spectacular throughout the month, with our guests being treated to some truly amazing sights.

Resting Leopard

The Sungula female is heavily pregnant, and we are hoping that she will raise her first litter of cubs in the vicinity of Royal Malewane. The lodge seems to be her safe haven, and she’s spending more time in the Marula trees camp. – Jon Wightman

Young Buffalo

Cape Buffalo bulls gain both confidence and attitude, as they grow older. This youngster was very interested in our vehicle, trying to play a game of intimidation. The posture of the buffalo, set against the setting sun and green bush made for a sticking image. – Darrel Camden-Smith

Drinking Elephant

I played around with different shutter speeds in order to capture this image of an elephant drinking at a nearby waterhole. The trick was to slow my shutter enough to get blurry movement in the spraying water, but not too much that the overall image would lose sharpness. – Rudi Hulshoff

Leopard Foot

Most predators sleep during the day, and photographing them can become somewhat boring. It is important to look for different angles and details during these times. The dangling foot of this leopard sleeping in a tree made for an unusual and striking image. –Ryan Jack

Playfull Wild Dogs

Wild dogs are energetic animals, and conduct all their activities with gusto. We found them playing in a shallow waterhole late one morning, burning off some energy before their midday siesta. – Juan Pitno
