Exceptional experiences are at the heart of everything that we do at The Royal Portfolio. As such, we have put together this list of our favourite dining experiences in the magnificent wine country that surrounds Cape Town.

Reubens 

Situated in Franschhoek, the heart of South Africa’s winelands, Ruebens is perfect for a days escape from the city and offers a spacious, airy restaurant with a beautiful terrace, creative cuisines fine wines. On a warm day sit outside in the leafy courtyard and enjoy one of their many local wines on offer.

Camphors at Vergelegen

After only a year of operation, Camphors was awarded eighth place in South Africa’s Top Ten. And it’s easy to see why. Make time to amble through the vast and immaculate estate among the oak and camphor trees before settling down to a leisurely lunch in the contemporary dining room within the original thatched, Cape Dutch farm house. Vergelegen have long produced some of South Africa’s best known wines – best known for their mighty Cabernet Sauvignon led blends.

Jordan

Great wines, a picture perfect setting and sensational food make Jordan hard to beat. For a more low key but utterly delicious meal, check out the Bakery. Top Chef George Jardine certainly knows how to craft a exceptional menu and you won’t go thirsty with Jordan’s extensive range of wines.

The Nine Yards Chardonnay is a highlight.

Pierneef a La Motte

The name of the restaurant was inspired by La Motte’s admiration of South African artist Jacob Hendrik Pierneef. Diverse, worldly flavours combined with the beautiful restaurant surroundings makes this a popular place for La Motte’s “family lunch” menu. Fine dining affairs prepared by Chef Michelle Theron are exceptional and the wine tasting and cellar tour is a must.

Foliage

Yet another top restaurant in the quaint town of Franschhoek which is not lightly giving up its mantle as the culinary capital of South Africa. Chef Chris Erasmus delights guests with his foraged fancies, delivering a seasonal menu rich in free-range meat and game.

The Restaurant at Waterkloof 

Remarkable wines and contemporary fine dining have put Waterkloof firmly in this year’s Top 10. The view towards Sir Lowry’s Pass is breath taking. It’s worth the visit simply for the architecture, but while you’re there be sure to taste the Circumstance Cape Coral Mouverdre – one of the best roses in the country.

Cavalli

Cavalli celebrates all things equestrian in a stylish and exquisitely modern setting among the horse paddocks. By placing an innovative spin on classic dishes, Cavalli’s “everyday gourmet” menu is brief but immensely satisfying and the perfect place to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon. Make sure you taste the Warlord 2009 and pay a quick visit the the basement art gallery.

Rust en Vrede

The original cellar, a National Monument built in 1785, has been converted into the dining room that is relaxed but vibrant. Rust en Vrede is consistently voted among the top 10 restaurants in the country and the wines remain some of the most revered in the land.

Overture

Chef Bertus Basson presides over this stalwart of the South African Top 10. The setting is sublime on a summer’s afternoon out on the patio among the misters with views of the Cape Peninsula in the far distance. The Hidden Valley and Lands End wines are certainly worth a taste.

Located on the Klein Zalze Estate among the vineyards and golf course, the unpretentious ambience and rustic decor belie chef Michael Broughton’s rigorously disciplined approach to food. Classic pairings and intense depth of flavour characterise the chalkboard menu of deceptively simple dishes.

Honourable Mentions

La Petite Colombe offers contemporary cuisine which fuses local ingredients with French flair in an upmarket vineyard restaurant. Diemersdal is a relaxed, farm style affair where you will dine in an old barn or out on the lush lawns overlooking the vineyards. Prices are reasonable and there’s a wide selection of wines produced by the farm – be sure to try the Grüner Veltliner. Ryan’s Kitchen is a firm favourite with the team at La Residence in Franschhoek where guests can look forward to an interactive experience between kitchen and table with delicious food in a relaxed and cosy dining room. De Grendel is perhaps the closest wine farm to Cape Town City Centre and offers picture perfect views of Table Mountain, delicious cuisine in an elegant dining room and great value for money. Check out the Table at De Meye for a relaxed and ethically sourced pasture to plate meal. Babel at Babylonstoren is certainly worth a visit if just to explore the beautiful farm – book yourself onto the garden tour before your lunch. If you find yourself in the Elgin region, make a reservation at The Pool Room at Oak Valley and sample some of their remarkable wines. The Werf Restaurant at Boschendal is great for a family day out or a cheeky picnic, while Tokara is a consistently great option for a more fine dining experience with some of South Africa’s top wines.
