From Whales to Wildflowers: Experience the best of South Africa this Spring
Visit South Africa just in time to enjoy the vibrant spring months. Guests can look forward to a gradual rise in temperatures and picture-perfect weather for both indoor and outdoor activities.
The spring months are drier and cooler – there is very little rainfall and the humidity is low. Vegetation is sparse resulting in improved visibility for game viewing as the animals make their way to the watering holes for hydration. The bush comes to life once again on Spring Day (1 September). Trees begin to bud, many animals give birth to their young and the migratory birds return making bird watching excellent.
Royal Malewane’s private safari villas are the perfect way to experience a Big 5 safari with family or a group of friends. Our opulent but comfortable villas can accommodate four guests in the Royal Suites, eight guests in The Farmhouse and 12 guests in Africa House.
Whale season has arrived in Hermanus and our guests at Birkenhead House have been making use of the beautiful sea-facing terrace overlooking Walker Bay. August, September and October are the best months to see the Southern Right Whales that have migrated to Hermanus to breed.
Hermanus is renowned as the best place for land-based whale watching in the world. Birkenhead House is privileged to enjoy the best vantage point in Hermanus – standing proud on the clifftop above Voelklip beach. From the main deck you’ll see pods of dolphins splashing playfully past the front deck as well as Southern Right and Humpback Whales. For the more adventurous, we recommend heading out on the ocean to experience whale watching and shark cage diving.
Spring season is flower season. From August to October vibrant wildflowers begin to cover the Western Cape’s ever-changing landscapes in a glorious celebration of colour. The best way to view the gorgeous flowers is on foot. Parks such as Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in Cape Town and Fernkloof Nature Reserve in Hermanus boast a variety of fynbos species in bloom, including proteas, ericas, bulbs and orchids.
The sunshine-yellow Canola fields found along the R43 between La Residence in Franschhoek and Birkenhead House in Hermanus are also not to be missed.
The Fair Cape Itinerary offers guests the best of the Western Cape. Experience all that Cape Town has to offer with three magical nights at The Silo Hotel before taking time out amid the mountainous wonder of the Franschhoek Valley at La Residence. Round things off with two nights in Hermanus, savouring the rugged beauty and the fresh coastal air.
The Royal Portfolio is currently offering guests the opportunity to book and pay for six nights at any combination of our properties: Royal Malewane, Birkenhead House, La Residence or The Silo Hotel and receive a complimentary night at either Birkenhead House, La Residence or The Silo Hotel.
