Dining is a quintessential part of a stay at any of The Royal Portfolio’s hotels. The cuisine at each property pays tribute to its unique location and complements the overall destination specific experience. For guests staying at Royal Malewane, La Residence, Birkenhead House or The Silo Hotel, there is no request too large for the expert chefs and menus are tailored to suit the dietary requirements and preferences of our guests’ discerning palates.
While Royal Malewane and Birkenhead House are private hotels for resident guests only, La Residence reserves a few tables each day for non-resident guests (subject to hotel occupancies) and The Silo Hotel is open to the public.
At Birkenhead House in Hermanus, guests can go mussel picking and coastal foraging with the Executive Chef. Mussel picking and coastal foraging for edible fynbos draw attention to the smaller details of the marine environment such as edible seaweeds. It’s all about highlighting fresh, local ingredients and immersing the guest in the destination.
Once the mussels are picked the guests can head back to the hotel and prepare the mussels with the chef before enjoying the delicious fruits of their labour on the front deck with a crisp Sauvignon Blanc from the nearby Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.

At the Chef’s Table in the Great Hall guests will enjoy a completely interactive evening with one of our celebrated chefs. An evening perfectly curated to your preferences and interests.
The experience begins with a leisurely stroll through the La Residence gardens. During the summer months, the abundance of black figs, ripe pomegranates, juicy plums, green artichokes and fragrant herbs will leave you spoiled for choice as you select the freshest seasonal ingredients for your feast.
The four-course meal complete with amuse bouche, palate cleanser and petites fours will be prepared in front of you while the chef talks you through the ingredients, cooking techniques and flavours. All that remains is for you to enjoy your meal accompanied by a perfectly paired selection of wines by our wine steward.

The safari experience is synonymous with exceptional food and wine. And lots of it. One of the highlights of a stay at Royal Malewane is having dinner out in the bush – the culmination of an evening game drive.
The bush tent is prepared, the table laid and lit with paraffin lanterns, and dinner is cooked outside on an open fire. Guests gather round brightly burning braziers and discuss the adventures of the day. There’s a thrill that comes from being out in the wild without much between you and the wildlife, other than your vigilant ranger.
It’s an other-worldly experience to be out under the clear night skies, chatting by the light of lanterns, and listening to the wild and wonderful sounds of Africa.
Guests at Royal Malewane can also look forward to a wonderful wine tasting or a late night whisky around the fire in the Masiya Bar – named after Royal Malewane’s first Master Tracker, Wilson Masiya.
Dining at 65 metres atop Africa’s largest contemporary art museum is certainly worth the journey. The Silo Rooftop is located on the 11th floor of The Silo Hotel – an intricately re-imagined grain storage building that is a tribute to contemporary style and design. Guests can look forward to a relaxed, al fresco experience with spectacular panoramic views of Cape Town. Poolside lounging is complemented with treats from the tempura bar, fresh oysters, pulled pork sandwiches, and a selection of healthy snacks from our raw bar. Enjoy a glass of bubbly, South African wine or a classic cocktail while you soak up the last of the day’s sunshine. After a late lunch or early dinner head out to one of Cape Town’s top cocktail bars for a nightcap.
For those looking for a more formal dining experience, The Granary Café on the hotel’s 6th floor delivers a delicious brasserie style menu under the careful culinary direction of Executive Chef Veronica Canha-Hibbert and is surely one of the most beautiful dining rooms in Cape Town.
