Join us on a visual journey through The Silo Hotel as we work our way up from the private parking entrance to The Sky Terrace.
Construction of the original grain silo building began in 1921 and was completed in 1924. Grain would arrive from the smaller, inland country silos by train and was deposited under the track shed before being weighed and sorted in the taller grain elevator part of the building. The grain would then be moved into the 42 storage bins before being shipped off to Europe.
The image above shows the redeveloped building incorporating 82 pillowed glass windows into the facade of the grain elevator and a further 22 around the top of the storage bins. Heatherwick Studio was responsible for the exterior architecture of the entire building as well as the interior of Zeitz MOCAA – the extraordinary contemporary art museum that opened below The Silo Hotel in September 2017.
The Vault, situated in the private parking entrance on level P3, is The Silo Hotel’s private art gallery. A philanthropic initiative in which we are able to give exposure to emerging local talent on rotation biannually. We will then look to integrate pieces into the hotel’s permanent collection. Kate Gottgen’s series entitled The Meek is currently on display.
The ground floor entrance lobby sets the scene for the rest of the hotel, showcasing the raw and industrial character of this historic building alongside Liz Biden’s vibrant and fanciful interiors. Mohau Modisakeng’s Ditaola series, commissioned pieces by Jody Paulsen, Must be the Rain and So Exotic, and Frances Goodman’s Blue Velvet adorn the bare concrete walls while Haldane Martin’s chandelier hanging alongside the original grain hoppers echoes the magnificent intricacy of Heatherwick’s pillowed glass windows.
The Silo Spa is located on the fourth floor and has five treatment rooms. The spa is a white and tranquil space in which guests can relax and indulge in the latest therapies and spa techniques using exclusive products including Black Pearl, Ling and Carol Joy. There’s also a sauna, a dedicated manicure and pedicure area and a small gym with state-of-the-art Precor equipment. The Silo Hotel Spa is open to the public by reservation. The sixth level of The Silo Hotel houses the main reception and concierge area, The Willaston Bar, and The Granary Café. Relaxed dining experiences and casual cocktails are complemented by spectacular views of the city and Table Mountain through the enormous pillowed glass windows. Guest Relations and Concierge Manager, Hoon Kim and his team ensure that guests receive The Royal Portfolio’s usual high standards of service. Hoon is one of only 12 South Africans to be honoured with the coveted ‘Crossed Keys’ – a member of the prestigious international hotel concierge association Les Clefs d’Or.
"The space is personal, intimate, and geared to how Liz Biden understands her guests rather than to any preconceptions about design hotels." Departures
The interiors of The Silo Hotel are contemporary and eclectic but remain warm and welcoming. Gentle nods towards the original grain silo are evident throughout the hotel. For example, an original machine head emerges from The Willaston Bar floor, and the circular chandeliers are inspired by the steel rings originally used inside the grain elevator.
The teal bar stools, made from soft Italian leather and the plush velvet sofas in The Willaston Bar help shape this beautiful space, a quirky contrast to the industrial theme of the building’s exterior. Most of the furniture was handmade in Cape Town by Moorgas & Sons.
Executive Chef Veronica Canha-Hibbert and her team have crafted a number of casual and contemporary menus that include breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, bar snacks, and a wonderful Sunday Roast.

The chandelier that adorns the spiral staircase joining floors 5, 6 and 6M is made from painted Jacaranda pods. Jacaranda trees are very special to the Biden family as they have a magnificent Jacaranda tree at their home in Cape Town under which the children and grandchildren love to play while at La Residence, six Jacaranda trees flank the dam – a generous gift from Sir Elton John who felt that the scene could use a dash of colour.
From the exterior of the building one can clearly see that each floor of the hotel is a different height – the sixth and seventh floors being the tallest. This enabled us to insert a mezzanine level into both floors. The Superior Suites and Family Suites on these two floors therefore enjoy and upstairs and a downstairs. The sixth floor mezzanine level contains a residents-only library, two private dining rooms that seat six, two Superior Suites, and The Wisdom Room, our private dining room for up to 22 people.
The Superior Suites are like one bedroom apartments with the bedroom and en suite bathroom upstairs. The Family Suites are located on the four corners of the seventh floor and each has two upstairs, en-suite bedrooms as well as a downstairs cloakroom.
Level eight and nine contain six Deluxe Superior Suites (on the corners), eight Silo Rooms and a Royal Suite. There are 28 rooms in total at The Silo Hotel. Each room has been individually decorated and each has spectacular views towards either Table Mountain, Lion’s Head and Signal Hill, the V&A Waterfront, Robben Island, Cape Town Harbour or the Atlantic Ocean. Admire the spectacular views of Table Mountain from the spacious balconies, relax in the private cinema or enjoy a massage in the treatment room before a private dinner with close friends.
