Art at The Royal Portfolio
Owner and art enthusiast, Liz Biden, continues to fill The Royal Portfolio’s hotels and lodges with her carefully curated collection of eye-catching pieces from all over the world.
Art brings a space to life
Liz Biden has a discerning eye for the exquisite and the unusual. On her travels and at home, Liz sources numerous pieces of art – often with a story and always with a particular space in mind.
“From the first encounter with Liz, it became apparent that we were dealing with a remarkable woman. Clearly very bright but also efficiently decisive – a wonderful character trait for an art collector.”
– Charles Shields, Director of Everard Read, Cape Town.
The art collection across The Royal Portfolio reveals Liz’s playful side, coupled with her distinct level of quality. Alongside international art from the likes of Ken Howard, the collection reflects some of South Africa’s most well-known artists including John Meyer, Beezy Bailey, Shany Van Den Berg, Sasha Hartslief, Denby Meyer and Ricky Dyaloyi to name but a few. Impressive Dylan Lewis sculptures are showcased on the lawns and in the port cochère at La Residence and at the entrance to Royal Malewane.
The art at each of our hotels and lodges reflect their unique character and mood, and form part of their destination-specific designs. From the more relaxed chic beach-house style at Birkenhead House to the opulent, maximalist grandeur of La Residence. The Silo Hotel takes our art experience to a whole new level with a focus on contemporary African art – and is currently home to over 300 pieces. The idea was to buy pieces in keeping with the art of Zeitz Museum Of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) found below. Royal Malewane’s three luxury safari lodges each have their own distinct style. Malewane Lodge is more traditional, The Farmstead is more contemporary, and Waterside brings a splash of colour to the bushveld through its whimsical design. Liz explains:
“I have always included wonderful art at each of The Royal Portfolio properties. Art brings a space to life, it creates warmth and tells stories. But moreover, art takes you on a journey which evolves as we evolve. Our guests love to enjoy the art collection at our hotels and lodges.”
