Art at The Royal Portfolio
Each of The Royal Portfolio properties has an elaborate and eclectic art collection with something intriguing around every corner.
Liz Biden has a discerning and well-travelled eye for the exquisite and the unusual. On her travels throughout Africa and around the world, Liz sources numerous pieces of art and furniture – often with a story but always with a particular space in mind.
“From the first encounter with Liz, it became apparent that we were dealing with a remarkable woman. Clearly very bright but also efficiently decisive – a wonderful character trait for an art collector. It was only later that we learnt that her skills as a shopper are legendary.” – Charles Shields, Director of Everard Read, Cape Town.
The collection across The Royal Portfolio reflects a keen and adventurous eye, coupled with a distinct level of quality. Alongside international art from the likes of Ken Howard, the collection reflects some of South Africa’s most well-known artists including John Meyer, Beezy Bailey, Deziree Smith, Shany Van Den Berg, Sasha Hartslief, Denby Meyer, Ricky Dyaloyi and William Kentridge to name but a few. Impressive Dylan Lewis sculptures are showcased on the lawns and in the port cochère at La Residence while immaculate Russian teak desks adorn the ante rooms.
The art at each property reflects the unique character and mood at each property, from the colonial charm at Royal Malewane to the chic beach house style at Birkenhead House and from the opulent grandeur at La Residence to the contemporary art at The Silo which is set to open in March 2017.

The collection at The One Above penthouse in Cape Town includes wonderfully contrasting pieces by greats such as William Kentridge (notably his tapestry ‘The Event Horizon’) alongside contemporary pieces by young, South African artists such as Sowetan born Mohau Modisakeng. There are also pieces by Carla Liesching, Brett Murray, Martie Strydom, Robin Rhode, Jaco Van Schalkwyk and Paul Emsley.
Liz Biden explains:
“I have always included wonderful art at each of The Royal Portfolio properties. Art brings a space to life, it creates warmth and tells stories. But moreover, art takes you on a journey which evolves as we evolve. Our guests love to enjoy the art collection at our properties. The Silo will take that art experience to a whole new level with a focus on contemporary African art – something that we are finding fascinating to learn about while discovering some of Africa’s incredible young talent.”
